On popular routes like Bangkok to Chiang Mai, lower berths and 1st class cabins can sell out 6–8 weeks before the travel date during high season (November to February). Weekend departures go even faster.

There is no direct sleeper train to Chiang Rai. The best route is: sleeper train Bangkok → Chiang Mai (overnight, ~13h), then minivan or bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (~3h, 150–250 THB). Total journey: ~16h but you sleep on the train and arrive refreshed.

Lower berths are slightly more expensive (~50 THB) but you get a small table by the window during the day. Upper berths are fine for sleeping and often easier to get last-minute. If you have luggage, lower berths have more storage underneath.
Yes — Thai sleeper trains are generally very safe. Carriages have an attendant, and berths have privacy curtains at night. Keep your valuables in your day bag and use the luggage hooks above the berth. Solo travelers, including solo women, use these trains regularly without issues.
Check 12Go Asia — sometimes they have seats when the SRT website shows sold out, due to held inventory. Alternatively, fly (budget airlines like AirAsia are often under 1,000 THB), take a VIP overnight bus (comfortable, similar price), or travel mid-week for better availability.
If booked through 12Go Asia, a digital confirmation on your phone is usually accepted. For SRT direct bookings, you may need to collect a physical ticket at the station (bring your booking reference and passport). Arrive 30 minutes early to allow time for collection.
